The 25th Bowl
While technology has networked the world together, we are interconnected and interdependent at a more visceral, and fundamental level, linked together like trees and earth, sky and clouds, ice and water. Imagine if we were ice floating in water, all made of the same stuff, yet possessing different qualities. Each of us has the ability to impact the other…to create…to destroy…but also elementally unified with the other by the water that fills the in-between spaces; creating interdependence and interconnectedness.
Water to me has been that ‘stuff’ in between. It flows through the structure of our bodies, our homes, and our cities, unifying ecosystems, energizing and nourishing our existence. Water fills the in-between space of our world as a precious resource, a valued commodity, an elemental and mythic force, and yet we have the ability to affect it…create it…destroy it…or nurture it. In doing any of these things, our actions ripple outwards in larger and larger circles. If our ripples are our impact on each other, what kinds of ripples are we creating? Through the ritual of taking one of the packets of water and pouring it into one of the twenty-four bowls we explore the interconnections and interdependence that exist between each of us and the natural environment. Pinning the empty bag onto the wave drawing on the wall places us in that “in between space” and reinforces this connection. And we ask ourselves the question of whether we can commit to having water for the twenty-fifth bowl. |
