Overlapping Connections
While the Cermak/Chinatown Station is the gateway to the surrounding Chinese neighborhood, commuters who use the station include Hispanic, African American and Anglo residents, and travelers who come from other locales to work in the area. In addition, it is a major tourist site attracting people from all over the world.
Overlapping Connections uses the Chinese welcome sign as an invitation to the immediate cultural surroundings while making an aesthetic link to the outlying neighborhoods. The design incorporates a variety of universal symbols found in the paper cutout craft traditions of numerous cultures including Chinese and Mexican. The variations in depth emphasize the movement and rhythm of the pattern while the interplay of color, line, shadow and texture all contribute to the vibrancy and dynamism of Overlapping Connections. Situated in the station stairwell, Overlapping Connections offers passengers a moment of calm and beauty as they continue on their journey.
Overlapping Connections was fabricated in my studio. We built a 10’ x 12’ easel and over 1300 pounds of clay. It was a learning experience working on such a big scale.
