HAND IN HAND
Hand In Hand is a series of wall sculptures installed in the entryways to the eight neighborhoods that make up the Chicago Veterans Center. The pieces capture hearts and minds by creating a welcoming, engaging and positive visual environment for Veterans, their friends, and their families. Rooted in interconnection, Hand In Hand suggests that wellbeing happens when an individual feels the power of connection to those around them. This idea reinforces the Chicago Veterans Centers’ belief that once embraced by their community, Veterans can ultimately receive the support and care that they need.
Images derived from nature are a key component to this installation. Ultimately, no matter who we are, our deepest roots are in nature and we remain permanently linked with all of creation. Hand In Hand uses patterns derived from basic, geometric constructs, such as circles, squares, and triangles, to symbolize different energies in the universe. By incorporating these symbols and icons, the installation has developed a graphic character and sense of place for its environment. Another key element to this work is the hand—the most symbolically expressive part of the human body. In different cultures the hand symbolizes different things, including welcome, good wishes, blessings, and protection. The pair of hands present in each sculpture panel hold different elements, representing the physical act of gathering or holding together.
Hand In Hand has become a visual identity for the Chicago Veterans Center. Colorful and vibrant, the work generates wonder and discovery in its viewers. The variations in surface depth from one to three inches emphasize the flow of organic patterns, creating a sense of movement. With its three dimensionality comes different layers of meaning, all of which are integral to the project. Establishing a bold, distinctive, and restorative atmosphere for the Chicago Veterans Center, Hand In Hand honors all who have served in our armed forces.
Each sculpture was created out of clay and then cast in polyester resin and fiberglass by Orlandi Statutory in Chicago, Illinois.
