Create, Innovate, Ignite
Create, Innovate, Ignite is an Elgin Community Initiative that was initiated by Rise Jones, Executive Director of Hamilton Wings in collaboration with Danielle Henson, and the Gail Borden Public Library.
The goal of Create, Innovate, Ignite project was to facilitate a community artwork that acknowledged the creative traditions of all of our cultures and celebrated International Peace Day and our individual commitment to peace.
Our community artwork was rooted in the South Asian women’s folk art tradition of an entryway hanging called a toran, that welcomes friends and deities into the sacred space that is the home. Our toran called Create, Ignite, Innovate expanded this family tradition to include the larger Elgin community.
Using recycled CDs participants wrote a peace action commitment on the silver side of the disc and collaged their idea visually on the other. Natural materials like leaves and seedpods were combined with recycled materials; audiotape, plastic mesh bag remnants etc.
As we assembled the toran, everybody was amazed to see how the various individual voices came together to create this beautiful toran. Folks from different segments of the Elgin community will continue to make their distinct contributions to the Create, Ignite, Innovate toran that will travel through the Elgin community and will be finally installed at the Gail Borden Library.
