What is really free?

How do we value the countless acts of love, kindness and support that are freely given and freely taken?

These are some of the questions explored by Indira Freitas Johnson in the Hand in Hand Community Project during the Dale and Mary Mrnak Memorial Visiting Artist Residency, at the College of St. Catherine,

February 16-20, 2009

The Hand in Hand Project was a continuation of the FreeNotFree Community Project which was first exhibited at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum in the spring of 2001.

It celebrates and honors everyday actions of love and kindness freely given, freely taken.

It questions the nature of “free” labor and investigates the basic transference of energy which is present in every form of exchange whether, physical, emotional, economic or psychic.
